The Future of Cultural Diplomacy: Soft Power & Cultural Diplomacy Study Group

THIS COMING FRIDAY on December 3rd, we have our FINAL session of the Future of Cultural Diplomacy’s Soft Power & Cultural Diplomacy study group, ‘Cultural Diplomacy in Action Today’! This session will feature Dr. Hendrik Ohnesorge (Managing Director, Center for Global Studies and Chair in International Relations, University of Bonn), discussing topics related to soft power and charisma. These study sessions are OPEN AND FREE TO ALL. You can register below!

This month, we had the honor of having Joseph S. Nye Jr (Harvard University Distinguished Service Professor Emeritus and former Dean of the Harvard's Kennedy School of Government) as our guest speaker. We were especially honored to have Dr. Nye for having popularizing the term 'Soft Power' with his books 'Bound to Lead: The Changing Nature of American Power' and 'Soft Power: The Means to Success in World Politics'. If you were unable to attend the session, you can find the recording here.

You can now find all links, resources and past events on our webpage below!

National Endowment for the Arts Award + El Sistema USA Partnership Update

We are honored to have received a “Grant for Arts Project” award from the National Endowment for the Arts for a project in collaboration with El Sistema USA® (ESUSA)! This project will commission composers from our initiative, Hear Her Song, to arrange their songs for El Sistema USA® affiliate youth ensembles. This collaboration will not only provide youth ensembles with new music from the Hear Her Song canon, but also provide professional opportunities for our composers, and expose youth to music of modern female composers that highlights stories of women leadership. Furthermore, these composers represent divergent musical styles and identity backgrounds, inviting a dialogue that fosters mutual respect for the diverse beliefs and values of all persons and groups. We are thrilled to announce our partnering El Sistema based organizations!

We are also thrilled to spotlight our Hear Her Song artists who will be working with these organizations! In addition to arranging their songs into orchestral compositions, our artists will host virtual workshops with the musicians of the programs, along with a panel discussion for a wider audience. We are pleased to introduce our composers, Faye Chiao, Dom Jones, Morley and Madeline Myers!

Hear Her Song Continues: 2022

As songs from the previous rounds of Hear Her Song move forward with the collaboration between the NEA and El Sistema USA®, we are also excited to press forward with a new round of composers, honorees and songs! Be sure to stay tuned in 2022 for these new songs by our incredibly talented artists and outstanding leaders!

Giving Tuesday

Today is #GivingTuesday! Giving Tuesday is an opportunity for communities around the world to come together through generosity in all its forms. We would be honored if you would consider contributing whatever you may be willing to share to The Canales Project as we continue to pursue our mission of creating cultural connections through the arts and conversation. We are deeply thankful to all community members of TCP and we are thrilled to develop our projects with your help!

Warmest regards,

The Canales Project
